as defined by merriam webster.com: jet lag is a condition that is characterized by various psychological and physiological effects (as fatigue and irritability), occurs following long flight through several time zones, and probably results from disruption of circadian rhythms in the human body.i'm not exactly sure what circadian rhythms are, but i definitely think mine have been disrupted. i've slept in indiana for 3 nights now... each night i have crashed at 8.30 p.m. on the dot. and it's not like casual falling asleep while watching a movie- it's completely passing out, not able to keep my eyes open if my life depended upon it- asleep.
what's been the odd part is that i hadnt slept in over twenty four hours by the time i landed in chicago. i didnt sleep at all on the plane and since that happened, i decided it was best to stay up as long as possible so that i could possibly just hop on the same sleep schedule as those in this time zone. however, this did not happen.
i have been waking up between 2.30 and 4.30 a.m. for the past three nights. it's getting quite annoying. it's not one of those situations where you wake up and feel groggy and like you want to just lay in bed all day... i'm awake. ready to go.
what's different about today is that it's christmas morning. when i was a kid, my brother, justin, and i would get up SO EARLY. it's now, 6.00 a.m. and if it were 15 years ago, justin and i would be waking up my parents right about now.
i feel like if i were to go downstairs and jump on justin's bed that he would say a few not-so-nice words and proceed to roll over and ignore me.
at any rate- i'm obviously home. i didnt think jet lag would be THIS big of an issue. im trying to view it as a blessing, though. maybe if i dont really get adjusted to the time here, when i go back to korea it wont be as bad to hop back on my regular schedule.
all this sleep schedule talk reminds me of my dear friend, katie. she was always convinced that her sleeping patterns were important to her body and health- i'm beginning to see her point.
on that note- merry christmas to all! i pray that you're enjoying your time, whether you're with family, friends or alone. i pray this holiday season will be a blessed one and that with the new year will come many more blessings! God be with you. xo.
