a new life beginning, another one ending...

I got some exciting news from Goshen, Indiana this weekend! One of my best-friends is having a baby!!! I was her Maid of Honor 5 YEARS ago in her wedding and now they're pregnant with their first child! It was so nice to chat with her on the phone and to get the details as to how she's feeling physically and emotionally! She also sent me her ultrasound pictures and it was just amazing to see the little guy or girl! I'm so excited for them and just pray for their preparation time!

Congratulations Jennie and Al! I'm so happy for you guys and the start of your new family!!

On a sadder note, I found out today that this guy in Seoul passed away. Last week I had heard about a fire in an apartment building in Seoul and that there was a foreigner who got severely burned. People were fundraising like crazy and spreading the word all over. I found a group on Facebook that was dedicated solely to make people aware of this man's situation and updated information all the time.

The more I read about him, I found out he's originally from Indiana. He went to IU and he's been in Korea teaching for awhile. I sort of felt a connection with this guy, whom I've never met. Today when his sister updated the group on Facebook and said that he passed away; I had many different emotions.

I had decided last week that I was going to send some money to the family through a fund that they created in Korea... I'm not sure if this is true for other people whom live in foreign countries, but in Korea there's this sense of family with foreigners. When you see someone with a western face, you have a connection with them. We tend to stick together and we form small families of our own to help us go through bad times, to encourage one another and to learn how to function in a foreign country. After reading this man's story, the simple fact that that could have easily been someone I knew made it painstakingly real for me.

As tears started pouring down my face today, I was really confused. I thought, 'How can I be so upset about a death of a person I've never known?' I'm still not exactly sure why I'm emotionally reacting this way, but my heart and prayers just go out to this man's family and friends. His parents flew over to Korea this past week and have been by his side. Apparently he has 3-4 younger siblings still in Indiana. I just pray that God will give his family the strength to get through this expensive and difficult time.

some of my fave texts that i have received while living in england: "there's a program on irish tv tonight called 'death or canada'. i wish i had the energy to stay up and watch it. i may have some tshirts made." "Worse." "Than." "Hitler." "That's bad news bears, my friend. I hope your magic shirts are keeping you warm." "Because we're celebrating Christmas time, leave your shoes out at half past nine. Leave them out until half past ten. Santa should have been by then. (i know what you're thinking, 'why is sarah in bible college when she is so gifted in the literary technique of rhyming?)" "You make me feel. You make me feel. You make me feel like a natural woman." "Should be fun on a bun!" "And stay off the circle line. It is an instrument of the devil." Expectancy

We have the following Bible verses written on a chalkboard above our kitchen sink: Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness & in the shadow of death, & to guide us to the path of peace. Luke 1:78-78 NLT I chose to write out these verses for a few reasons. First of all, I like the picture it illustrates of God's mercy & how ultimately his mercy & light lead us to peace. Second, these verses speak of hope to me. They say that even in darkness & death there is hope! And last, it reminds me to live every day with expectancy. It says that heaven "is about" to break upon us; it's almost foreshadowing God's faithfulness. I've been thinking about this third point a lot lately. Expectancy. What does it mean? What does it look like? I think I've referenced it before, but I'm reading a book that's written specifically for people in a time of ...
