the start of a new year...

happy new year!

it's hard to believe that 2008 has indeed started. i rang in the new year on an airplane flying over the pacific ocean. in all technicalities i didnt even have a december 31 at midnight this year. by the time it was getting to be that time at home, i was crossing the international date line, so i had missed it all together. time is quite a funny thing.

i find myself not very eager for 2008 and i'm not sure why. i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that i'm not sure where my life is going. this little stint in korea has lasted a lot longer than i had ever imagined when i first got here. i am loving it here, and i'm happy to have had this time in korea, but what is my life like outside of korea? i have sort of forgotten what it's like to not live here and to interact in a different culture. i praise God that i AM so comfortable here, in this environment, but i'm afraid that it's caused me to forget...
my time at home was a good one. i got to see a lot of people who mean so much to me. and it was great to be with my family for christmas. it was truly a special time with so many people and i fear that this year was one of those years that will never quite be matched.

my first few days back in korea have been good. it's been nice to catch up with friends again and even to be back at school. although, i am thankful that i came back to only a three-day work week. i dont think i could have handled a full one! i have a feeling that school is only going to get busier and busier the closer we approach march. the school year goes from march to march here, so in march things at school will change quite a bit. i think the change will be nice, but i am a bit anxious about a new set of kindergartners...

i find myself with this collision of things from home and things in korea. i brought back quite a bit of stuff with me... mostly food items, such as the snack to the left, and it's always kind of weird to enjoy things in korea that are truly specialties from home. it's almost like two parts of my life meeting for the first time. this world is truly becoming smaller and smaller.

I know exactly what you mean about the world getting smaller and smaller. It's strange when things from the two sides of the earth collide.

texts.

some of my fave texts that i have received while living in england: "there's a program on irish tv tonight called 'death or canada'. i wish i had the energy to stay up and watch it. i may have some tshirts made." "Worse." "Than." "Hitler." "That's bad news bears, my friend. I hope your magic shirts are keeping you warm." "Because we're celebrating Christmas time, leave your shoes out at half past nine. Leave them out until half past ten. Santa should have been by then. (i know what you're thinking, 'why is sarah in bible college when she is so gifted in the literary technique of rhyming?)" "You make me feel. You make me feel. You make me feel like a natural woman." "Should be fun on a bun!" "And stay off the circle line. It is an instrument of the devil." "I'd love a bottle of fruit loops right about now." "I've never seen a movie that...

Expectancy

We have the following Bible verses written on a chalkboard above our kitchen sink: Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness & in the shadow of death, & to guide us to the path of peace. Luke 1:78-78 NLT I chose to write out these verses for a few reasons. First of all, I like the picture it illustrates of God's mercy & how ultimately his mercy & light lead us to peace. Second, these verses speak of hope to me. They say that even in darkness & death there is hope! And last, it reminds me to live every day with expectancy. It says that heaven "is about" to break upon us; it's almost foreshadowing God's faithfulness. I've been thinking about this third point a lot lately. Expectancy. What does it mean? What does it look like? I think I've referenced it before, but I'm reading a book that's written specifically for people in a time of ...
