music. something so ingrained in our lives that a lot of people dont always hear the ever-constant noise playing in the background. i believe music is a very powerful thing. it evokes all kinds of emotions, and there seems to be a genre' of music for everyone out there. i think of watching a movie and how important the music is. it's used as something to keep you emotionally attached. think about a horror movie and the creepy music they always play. if you pay close enough attention- it's not the creepy music that is scary- it's when the music stops and you have that terrifying silence before something big happens. a bad soundtrack or score for a movie could potentially take away from the story and make the difference between an epic and just another movie.
i am personally obsessed with music. although, in saying that i find myself a very loyal music listener. if i find something that really has an impact on me- i usually stick with it for a long time. that can be a good or a bad thing. sometimes i miss out on some really amazing music, because i am too involved with my 'favorites'; however, lately i have found myself more open to listening to new music. i think a lot of it has to do with my friends. i have a couple fellow music-obsessed friends whom listen to more obscure music, so they keep me up-to-date, usually.
as i hung out with friends on sunday, i found my mind wandering to the past. something music often does to me. one song was played and i immediately went back almost two years ago, to a moment i shared with a friend, driving in my car, singing along to snow patrol. it never fails, whenever i hear that particular song- i go back. last week i heard a counting crows song that i havent heard in years, and it was amazing how that song took me back to a time in my life when all i ever listened to were the counting crows. it took me back to friends i have who love the band and their music.. it made me reflect on the past few years and how so much has changed. monday, i decided to listen to an entire album of counting crows and it made me very contemplative. there are a hand full of people that i think of when i hear them play and it's amazing to look at where our lives are now.
something i have noticed is that i can make a conscious effort to change my thoughts with particular songs. sometimes i listen to my friend play the guitar and he plays songs that take me back, but i find myself being able to let go of those memories and to allow myself to make a new one at that moment. i wonder when the point in time is when you start replacing past memories with present memories.. does it always happen as consciously as it has been happening lately.. or do things happen more subconsciously and you will eventually have all new memories with songs from your past...

i guess moving forward does that. and the memories are that much richer. someone once said something like it's not the pillow you lay your head on that determines how well you sleep, but rather the memories that you dream on that pillow.
or something like that. i've really butchered it but maybe you get what i mean.
