a korean wedding...

yesterday i attended one of my coworkers weddings. it was my first korean wedding and i was happy that i went to experience it.

some differences: (compared to an american wedding)
  • there were no bridesmaids or groomsmen
  • no kiss at the end of the ceremony
  • no vows were exchanged
  • they cut the wedding cake and drank wine at the end of the ceremony
  • there were 5-6 photographers and video men running around all the time
  • the audience didnt pay much attention to the ceremony
  • no one stood at any point in time
  • there was clapping at certain points during the ceremony
  • the newlyweds bowed to each set of parents
  • they took group photos after the wedding (family shots, but then big group shots with friends)
  • you had to pay money to get a ticket to eat the buffet at the 'reception'
  • you had a certain amount of time to eat. then you had to leave.
  • no reception
some similarities:
  • her father walked her down the aisle
  • the mothers both lit a candle
  • it seemed they had a special song they had played for them
  • there were flowers and candles (it was quite pretty)
  • she wore a white wedding dress
  • he wore a tux
i did like the simplicity of it. at least it seemed simple; however, i didnt like how it seemed more for show than anything. there was some lady that messed with the bride's gown the entire time to make sure it looked 'perfect'.. when my coworker was walking down the aisle, before and after the ceremony, you could tell she was more worried about falling down than anything. she didnt smile at all. there was not really any emotion involved. and that made me sad. even the bride's sister was running around chatting with people and fixing her makeup during the ceremony. it was quite bizarre. i missed the quiet of a sanctuary and the joy people seem to have at home when people come together in marriage. yesterday, it seemed like having the wedding was just a formality that they had to do. i think i am going to have the opportunity to go to another coworkers wedding in may. so i am very interested in comparing the two.
here are a few photos from the ceremony:

texts.

some of my fave texts that i have received while living in england: "there's a program on irish tv tonight called 'death or canada'. i wish i had the energy to stay up and watch it. i may have some tshirts made." "Worse." "Than." "Hitler." "That's bad news bears, my friend. I hope your magic shirts are keeping you warm." "Because we're celebrating Christmas time, leave your shoes out at half past nine. Leave them out until half past ten. Santa should have been by then. (i know what you're thinking, 'why is sarah in bible college when she is so gifted in the literary technique of rhyming?)" "You make me feel. You make me feel. You make me feel like a natural woman." "Should be fun on a bun!" "And stay off the circle line. It is an instrument of the devil." "I'd love a bottle of fruit loops right about now." "I've never seen a movie that...

We're all moved in!

Expectancy

We have the following Bible verses written on a chalkboard above our kitchen sink: Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness & in the shadow of death, & to guide us to the path of peace. Luke 1:78-78 NLT I chose to write out these verses for a few reasons. First of all, I like the picture it illustrates of God's mercy & how ultimately his mercy & light lead us to peace. Second, these verses speak of hope to me. They say that even in darkness & death there is hope! And last, it reminds me to live every day with expectancy. It says that heaven "is about" to break upon us; it's almost foreshadowing God's faithfulness. I've been thinking about this third point a lot lately. Expectancy. What does it mean? What does it look like? I think I've referenced it before, but I'm reading a book that's written specifically for people in a time of ...
